Animal trapping and winter time…

It's winter, the height of small animal trapping at Meryl’s Termite and Pest Control. In this post we’ll be talking specifically about small animal trapping and for today we are going to exclude rodent control although please take note that Meryl’s Termite and Pest Control does offer rodent control as well and the height of that season is also at it’s peak this time year. However, today we’re going to take a special look at small animal trapping which includes such animals such as but not limited to the racoon, opossum, squirrel, skunk, bat, and armadillo. Those are the main small animal control calls that we get the most.

In most cases we use a have-a-heart trap for small animal trapping although each target pest has a preferred baiting method so a positive identification of the animal must be made. We have a very high success rate in animal trapping, which really comes down to experience. Most rodents and small animals will stay away from any kind of trapping device if their is a human scent associated with the trap. Armadillo’s are probably the most challenging due to their poor eye-site(which also works against them when setting up a trap with fencing to lead the animal into the trap) and the unavailability of their main food source to use as bait. Squirrels and racoons can be especially troublesome when they look for shelter from the cold in an attic space. They tend to chew on exposed wires which greatly increases the chance of fire. Small animals that invade a home can also be responsible for many diseases as well as being the cause of tick and flea infestation. You’ll notice the fleas especially once the host is gone and they have to find another food source which usually ends up being the humans that are living in the dwelling, or the pet dog or cat. All these reasons for small animal control are much more serious than just the annoying noises they make at night.

Every day is a new adventure at Meryl's Termite and Pest Control!

A vital part of animal trapping and rodent control is finding the entry point of the structure and sealing it so once the animals are removed, other animals can’t get back in. We also have to determine what is attracting these animals to a home in the first place. This can include bird feeders for example. It is especially important in places like attics and wall-voids that have wires which can be damaged increasing the risk of fire. Rodents and other animal pests have also been know to tear into the air-conditioning ducts in crawlspaces. This can not only cost money to fix the ducts, but you’re also losing air which is going to raise your electric bill. Another problem which can often arise from having Rodents and small animals enter your home is the introduction of other pest species such as fleas and ticks. As if that were not enough, rodents can be carriers of bacterial and viral infections and diseases such as hantavirus, salmonella, tularemia, rabies, and more. They can also have a negative impact on the health of asthma patients. This is why small animal trapping rodent control is so important.
