Today we are going to talk about a service that we offer at Meryl’s Termite and Pest Control, namely equine pastures. When treating equine pastures, we target red imported fire ants. The potential threat and dangers of the red imported fire ants pose to horses and other farm animals include multiple stings to the victim, particularly in areas with little or no hair such as the ears, eyes, muzzle, perineum, and ventral abdomen with young or sick animals being at higher risk. Our region of central Florida, including towns like Ocala, Lady Lake, the Villages, Dunnellon, and surrounding areas are all highly susceptible to these pests.
If you have an animal that is attacked by red imported fire ants, immediately move the victim out of the area of the attack. Many times the cause of the attack is due to the animal stepping on a mound. Localized treatment may be all that is necessary in milder attacks, but depending upon the extent of the damage that has been inflicted, a veterinarian should be consulted immediately. Remember that the eyes are a most critical site for red imported fire ant damage.
We treat equine pastures on a quarterly basis. Please keep in mind that besides equine pastures, we also offer yard service targeting red imported fire ants for homes in residential areas. Our yard service can also include targeting pests such as ticks and fleas. Please call us to get a free estimate and let Meryl’s Termite and Pest Control help protect your animals and loved ones today.
