Night lights and spiders...
This is actually an interesting topic because we here at Meryl's Termite and Pest Control deal with this situation every summer in at least one or two instances. I do believe we touched on this subject briefly in other blog posts but now we'll deal with it exclusively.
Many spiders and other flying insects are nocturnal (come out at night). Flying insects are drawn to out-door lights; this is especially evident when the lights are located on the eve of a house (night lights). Add a property with heavy vegetation and your going to have even more spider and insect activity at night. The bugs are drawn to the lights and the spiders are drawn to the bugs. Spiders are strict carnivores and eat bugs. It's their main food source.
The summer is our rainiest season here in central Florida. This means pesticide barrier sprays are going to break down quicker than they would during the other three seasons. It is also our most humid time of the year which also will eat away at the barriers. So basically, what it comes down to is that you're going to see an increase of bugs and spiders close by the night lights. It can get a bit messy. If possible, try to keep the nights lights off during the summer nights. If this is not possible due to security reasons, that's no problem. You can call our company and we will schedule a follow-up between quarterlies treatments until the summer bug season is over which usually starts to slow down in the autumn. I would say our peak months of activity when this problem can become most apparent are June through August.
Besides spiders, what insects can be attracted to night lights? Many! Mostly (but not exclusively) flying insect and in the range of mosquitoes, moths and gnats.
Living in Florida can be wonderful. We get a break from the long and harsh winters of the north. That comes with a price because many pests enjoy the sub-tropical temperatures as well. For any northern transplants, it may take some time to get used to, I know it did for myself.
