German Cockroach Control

Meryl’s Termite and Pest Control provides German Cockroach Control and clean-out service.

The German cockroach is in a class of one of the worst pest species to plague man. Originally, the German cockroach was thought to be a native of Europe but later it was thought that the German cockroach emerged from Ethiopia in Northeast Africa. Today, the main trend of thought seems to link it’s origin to Southeast Asia which is interesting since it bares a similar appearance to the Asian cockroach which it is often mistaken for. In central Florida, we have both species, so the confusion between the two are common. The differences between the two are apparent through their behavior since the German cockroach infests the inside of the home while the Asian cockroach usually spends most of it’s time outdoors found under piles of leaves that have gathered around the house where moisture has collected. Another determining factor is that the Asian cockroach can fly whereas the German cockroach, although winged, usually does not fly. They prefer to run instead.

When an infestation starts out it will usually start in the kitchen first then spread to the bathroom. Once the infestation escalates to the point of severe they will move into other rooms of the house feeding on their own feces, shed skins, toothpaste, glue, soap, and bodies of other roaches. As omnivorous scavengers they normally prefer feasting on meats, sugars, starches, and fatty foods when readily available.

German cockroach control is important because of the harmful pathogens they spread which include typhus, salmonella, and e coli. They also are the cause and irritate the condition of childhood asthma and have a very distinct odor. When a new infestation starts out they usually will only be seen at night. In the case of severe infestations when room is limited and overcrowding occurs they will become more active during the day. They will also stain walls with their feces(these are called fecal smears and it’s how they mark their territory and to attract other roaches), ruining paint, and even causing mental distress in some people. This is why these roaches need to be eliminated from the home and why German cockroach control is so important.

How German Cockroaches Enter Your Home

German roaches need humans in order to survive. It is important to note that having German cockroaches does not necessarily mean that you keep a dirty house. There are different ways that German cockroaches enter a home or business. Usually, they are accidentally brought in through infested items from other places such as but not limited to garage sales or storage units. They enter the home through infested items such as refrigerators, portable phone stands, boom boxes, microwave ovens, and so forth. They also can be brought into the home through groceries bought from the supermarket. It is also possible for German cockroaches to enter the home through the wall voids of neighbors when living in attached condominiums or apartments.
