September is recognized as flea and tick month at Meryl's Termite and Pest Control. Even though summer is over and the autumn swiftly approaches we still have a couple months left for flea and tick infestations. Flea and tick infestations on the inside can occur 365 days a year but usually when talking about the outdoors we're looking at a season that starts in or around March or April and ends in early November. Keep in mind this depends greatly on temperatures. The earlier the cool down, the lesser the season. This year in particular forecasters are predicting a very warm autumn due to climate change so we my not feel the cool down until sometime in December. All in all, it's a long season.
So with all this in mind, Flea and tick control is one of our most important services that we offer. In the case of severe infestations or when the primary host is gone, fleas have been known to bite humans. Ticks also will occasionally feed on humans and spread diseases such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Fever. It is also important to note that you don’t necessarily have to own a dog or cat to become infested with fleas or ticks. Many times if a small animal such as a squirrel, rat, or opossum dies in your yard, attic, or crawlspace, this can also trigger an infestation. This is why it’s important to get on our flea and tick control program.
Remember there are some simple steps you can take on the outside of the home to help reduce infestations such as keeping the grass mowed and raking up the leaves. Also, keep trees and bushes in check not allowing them to grow wildly and not allowing them to come in contact with the structure (your home). Not only can we treat with pesticides, but we add in a growth regulator, this is a double knock out. There are some things our clients can do to help us to get maximum control.
On the inside it’s important to loosen up the eggs and get rid of some of the adults by vacuuming before we begin treatment. The vacuum bag should then be discarded, if it’s a canister, it should be taken out and cleaned with water and bleach solution. We can then begin treatment on the inside. After we conclude our treatment we ask our clients to remain out of the structure until the pesticide has completely dried up, at least three hours. This is a good time to take your dog or cat to the veterinarian or the groomer to give them a flea dip bath. Meryl’s Termite and Pest Control does not treat your dog or cat directly, but we do recommend that your pet be on a medication which is taken to kill the pests on their body.
