Trapping away those summertime blues….

Trapping away those summertime blues.... It's hot our there... REALLY HOT. The initial forecast for our region of Florida in 2016 was a cooler than average summer while the northeast (New York, etc.) was supposed to be warmer than average. It's go to take pre-season forecasts with a grain of salt. The reason for this forecast was the belief in the development of La Nina as opposed to El Nino. You may have noticed we've had a drier than normal summer already and this could very well be a sign the a drought going into next year is imminent. Drought doesn't necessarily mean less pests, in fact, it tends to make things worse as insects and other pests are looking for water. Can you guess where they go to look for it? Yes, they invade homes in search of h2o.

So what does this all mean for our pest control season? A few things but today we'll focus on trapping. We're having an unusual spike in trapping this year at Meryl's Termite and Pest Control. Usually, our trapping season reaches its height in December through January when it's cold and animals are looking to escape the cooler weather by nest in attics and such.

Trapping can sometimes yield some unusual results.

gecko

Take for example this Tokay gecko. This lizard was trapped in an attic and was not our original target. It's an invasive species originating from Asia. These lizards came to our country through the pet trade. They were released here in Florida and now we have some groups of Tokay geckos in extreme northern Marion County among other places. Most likely their numbers will increase. The homeowner was very happy to have us remove the gecko from her home, and never kept such lizards as pets.

Our trapping service can include anything from squirrels, racoon, armadillos, and opossum among others. We usually are able to trap them fairly quickly but sometimes trapping may require some patience since they may have to get used to the trap first. This is especially the case when talking about mice and rats. That's all for this time. We hope you'll choose Meryl's Termite and Pest Control for all your trapping needs.
